Make this Winter a little more bearable with a trip to Bear Mountain—a popular local destination and a unique park system stretching from the edge of New York City through the Hudson Valley. From late October through mid-March, Bear Mountain offers an outdoor skating rink with spectacular views of the Hudson Valley’s scenic landscape. Admission is $5 and guests can either bring their own skates or rent a pair for only $5. Don’t let its name fool you— the Woodbury Ski Area offers more than just ski slopes. This 14-trail destination offers after school programs, day camps, night skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing that are perfect for your next family day trip. Admission to the Woodbury Ski Area includes tube rentals and a three-hour lift ticket. Ever heard of shoesnowing? Neither have we—until we came across Cross Country Ski & Snowshoeing at Windham Mountain Resort in Windham, NY. After you strap on the tennis-racket-shaped shoes that help with balance and prevent you from sinking into the snow, prepare for a snowy hike through a winter wonderland. The trail takes you onto labeled, groomed, and tracked trails near the Batavia Kill Creek with breathtaking mountain views. Admission is for adults is $10 and $8 for kids. Click here for more info.
For totally tubular snow tubing, head to New York’s largest snow tubing park at Hunter Mountain. An hour car ride from the Hudson Valley and a short three-minute ski lift ride will take riders to a 20-lane, 1000 ft. slope snow tubing extravaganza. Although you must be at least 42 inches tall to ride, there’s a mini tubing park for the young ones as well as a snack bar and fire pit for all to enjoy. Gear up and head to Mohonk Mountain House Pavilion Ice Rink for pick-up games on the city’s only NHL-regulation-sized ice rink.
